Time & Location
Oct 16, 2021, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM
About the event
This year's theme is STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS: Promoting Excellence, Equity and Inclusivity in a Multilingual Classroom. Newcomers can pose unique challenges to programs at any level. Our keynote speakers, Brenda Custodio and Judith O'Loughlin, will share with us specific strategies to support new arrivals from elementary age to adults, including suggestions for students with interrupted schooling and trauma-backgrounds. Both Brenda and Judith are past K-12 ESL classroom teachers who now focus on teacher training and professional development. Together they have published two books, one on Students with Interrupted Education (SIFE) and one on Supporting English Learners after Trauma. Brenda and Judith are TESOL program professionals, having worked at Ohio State University and New Jersey City University respectively. They are also part of a national Professional Development grant through Ohio State which is funded by the US Department of Education. Featured speaker Dr. William Stone, presently teaches in the Linguistics and TESOL programs at Northeastern Illinois University. He has extensive EFL/ESL teaching experience and has inspired many Graduate and Undergraduate students to excel in the TESOL profession. His favorite TESOL classes are English grammar and pragmatics. He has spoken at ITBE conventions and workshops more than a dozen times. In 2019 ITBE honored him with the Elliot Judd Outstanding Teacher award.
Our virtual workshop opens at 8:30 am with a Meet and Greet, and will conclude at 4:10 pm after a wrap-up and raffle gathering. All attendees will be entered into a raffle for one free registration to 2022 ITBE Annual Convention and one of four $25 Amazon gift cards. We will also be featuring lunchtime SIG meetings and an opportunity to visit our virtual Exhibitor's Hall.
Professional Development Hours will be based on individual attendance, which will be collected in every session, up to 5.5-6 hours depending on the certificate requested. We are looking forward to 'seeing' you at the workshop! ITBE Board
